Go Green

You can gain lots of painting inspiration from greenery. “Greenery” and foliage are not always green, though, so remember to be creative and have fun with color!

TRY THIS!

Try using the way your brush moves naturally to create the entire leaf with different amounts of pressure.

ASSIGNMENT

1 When painting greenery, I like to use a reference picture to make sure I’m capturing the movement and shapes correctly. Gather a few references images for the greenery you’d like to paint.

2 Mix up a batch of different greens on your palette. If you’re painting trees, branches, or stems, you may want a few brown mixtures as well.

3 If the leaves and stems are not proportionate or don’t flow the right way, they won’t look as realistic. It’s a difficult balance to keep things feeling loose while also being mindful of the natural flow of greenery. Do your best to mimic the organic nature and shapes of the leaves and greenery as you paint.
